Safety Meeting

As teacher's, we need to blow off steam every now and again. Tuskers bar is a perfect location for doing just this! We do this under the code name "Safety Meeting". It's a great neighborhood bar, and the owner of DT's liquor store and Tuskers bar seems to like my paintings, which helps motivate me to keep painting her business! This is painting is unique because it shows the first signs of life in it: the moving pickup truck. Usually my work features only parked cars and no people, because if you sepnd much time in Cheyenne, that is what you usually see.

DT's Patio Bar

Here's another in a series of buildings and bars paintings I've been doing. This time we get to see another side of DT's, the "patio bar" side; decorated with one of our heavy October snows.

Yet another building in Cheyenne

My friend Connie Norman told me about this building here in Cheyenne after the architect, Glen Garrett, who currently occupies the building, talk about its' design as a guest speaker in her class. It's on the corner of Capital Ave and 17th st. Go check it out!

Count Chocula!!

One of my favorite things about October, besides the myriad of pumpkin flavored treats and drinks, is the the seasonal release of COUNT CHOCULA cereal!!! As a kid you could buy the Count and his berry flavored cohorts all year round; but somewhere in the late 90's they started being sold only in October. So to celebrate, I painted myself as a kid (hence the Cylon toy) enjoying some chocolate vampire goodness!

Coffee break!

Over the years I have done a series of self portraits, illustrating mundane activity in my everyday life, as seen through my eyes. I college I started doing these; some of my favorites were me shaving and me reading Spider-Man, whilst on the toilet. Well, I am going back to the well and finding new moments to paint.

Here is a representation of me, at work, my desk a mess as usual, enjoying a moments peace with my coffee...

Recently I was commissioned to design a tattoo for a coworker who is trying to cover up a back surgery scar. The design was her idea, but I think it turned out pretty gruesome!!

Movie night

I love the Lincoln theater here in Cheyenne. It's an old theater that's been fixed up and has the "largest screen in Wyoming"! There's just something cool about driving down Central Ave at night and seeing all of that neon...a lot more inspiring than the large boxes that pass for movie houses these days!

So, to continue my series of paintings featuring me in comic book covers I have loved over the years, I give you "the Atomics" #2. I first saw Mike Allred's art on the cover of Comic Shop News!, promoting the then upcoming Atomics comic book series. I was blown away by the shear energy and excitement of the image. At the time I was slowly getting back into comics after a 6 year lapse, and Mike's art was the boost I needed to get excited about this art form again! After reading the Atomics, I got every issue of Madman I could find and wrote Mike a letter telling him how much I liked his work. He sent me a postcard thanking me for the kind words, and thus began years of correspondence. I know it's cliche to say that Mike Allred is the "nicest guy" in comics, but it is TRUE!! Over the years Mike and I have e-mailed each other and then last year I finally had the pleasure of meeting him and Laura at the Neon Monster in San Francisco and they greeted me with big hugs. People this talented aren't usually this friendly and open, but the Allreds buck the norm!

So, anyway, here is my self portrait version of the classic "The Atomics" #2...

The return!

I'm BACK!! I don't know if anyone follows my blog, but for the imaginary followers I have, I am sorry for my absence.
I haven't updated this blog in a dog's age...
To start off this new, sporadic round of blogging, I am posting a recent painting of the WYOMING MOTEL here in Cheyenne. It's part of a planned series that will feature overlooked, but frequently driven past, buildings here in the Capital City!

Another self portrait project...

I'm doing another in a series of self portrait homage/ripoffs, this time based on the classic "The Incredible Hulk" #340. As a teenage boy, Todd McFarlane's art had a profound impact on my artistic stylings, and I spent many years trying to emulate his style. This Hulk cover blew me away as a kid and still blows me away as an adult!

Here's the process so far....all inked up!

Self portraits continue...

So, here is another in what I hope to be a series of homage/ripoffs of some of my favorite comic book covers. This little self portrait is based on Amazing Spider-man #39. I always loved the image of Peter Parker UNMASKED, being drug off to god knows where by the Green Goblin. As a kid, the image of the hero in such peril made a big impact on me.

Self portrait series

So, after doing a few self portraits in the style of other artists, in a series of homages/ripoffs, I decided to keep on doing the same thing! Except now, I am going to do self portrait homage/ripoffs of some of my favorite comic book covers! To start this series, I decided to throw myself into Barry Windsor Smith's classic cover to "Conan the Barbarian" #1. As a kid I LOVED Conan; I grew up reading John Buscema drawn issues and Gary Kwapisz and Ernie Chan on "Savage Sword". I always wanted the first issue of Conan, but it was WELL out of my junior high price range, so I'd spend hours starring at a picture of the cover in my Overstreet Price Guide.....dreaming. As a result, the image took on a mythic quality; and to this day, when I see it, I get the same feeling I got when I was 13!

Been rereading the WATCHMEN again, getting geared up for the movie. Haven't read it for about 7 years, and MAN I forgot wait a great story it is! And Dave Gibbons art is better than half the crap that's out there these days! Plus, John Higgins coloring, so powerful. Hope the movie does it justice...

After 10 years of driving my good ol' reliable Subaru, I broke down and bought myself a new car! Well, it's new to me. It's a 2006 Chrysler 300C SRT and man alive it is FAST!!! Nothing better than a luxury sedan that's got some get up and go!!!

I never thought I'd see this felt so good to watch Barack Obama take the oath of office today! Not only is it amazing to see an African American become president, but it also feels SOOOOOO good to know that the reign of Bush is FINALLY over!! Free at last indeed!!

New Year...a new hope

Well, 2008 is over, in the books if you will. Now it's time to start 2009 and I can think of no better way than a drawing of me as the new years baby! I wonder what 2009 will hold for me, lord knows a year ago I didn't think I'd be where I am at today....
