Astonishing Preview

This is from issue 2 of Astonishing Adventures, the pencil stage of the artwork. I usually work rough in a 4H pencil and then tighten it up in a 2B mechanical. One benefit of inking your own work is the pencils don't have to be TOO tight, the inker (me) will take care of the details.

This is my boy, Harrison, posing for his role as the character "Harrison" in my upcoming series, "Astonishing Adventures". He's quite the actor!

Compromising Photographs

This is the first in series of reference picture side by side comparisons. A lot of artists whose work I admire and blogs I follow do this. I LOVE Paolo Rivera's "Wacky Reference Wednesday" and Joe Quinones "Photobooth Fridays".
This is me, one of the "stars" of my upcoming series, "Astonishing Adventures".

Astonshing Before and After

Here is glimpse at some BEFORE and AFTER artwork for my upcoming book, Astonishing Adventures. The pencilled page was a good start, but I decided to retool some of the images and layout slightly. The finished result is closer to what I had in mind.

Everyday at lunch, my buddy and I watch the last half of this early 70s "classic" detective show....CANNON! It stars William Conrad, of Jake and the FatMan fame. It's great early 70s cheese, "wakachika" guitar during chases, thin plotlines, and a very fat leading man! Here is my homage to this forgotten classic.

Astonishing Adventures...redux

So, I had the first issue of my new FOUR issue mini series, Astonishing Adventures, IN...THE...CAN. Until I attended a symposia at this year's TRiCKSTER during SDCC; during which I realized...I need to revamp the book! I wasn't happy with the way the first half of the book looked; I wanted a stylistic change to happen during the story, but I wasn't happy with the way it turned out. SO...I am redoing a large portion of the book and I am much happier with it! For comparison, I am posting the 1st and 2nd versions of (part of) the same page.

What's for Breakfast at Tiffanys? BBBBBRRRRRAAAAAIIIINNNNNSSSSSssss!

This October 1st will the first and hofully not last, Cheyenne ZombieFest! I am going to be there doing Zombiefied to get in the swing of things, I thought I'd do some warm up drawings. Here is one of the most elegant and beautiful (both inside and out) in the 20th century, Audrey a zombie. Is it in bad taste? More than likely.

My 100th POST!!!!

Well, here it 100th post! When this goes up, I will be at Wizard World Chicago Comic Con, where I am A GUEST!!! This has been a good year for me so far, and this week will be a milestone; it has seen the death of Kenobi and will soon...oh, whoops...wrong milestones.
My self published graphic novel, Kidnapping Kevin Smith, FINALLY hits the newstands (worldwide, that is) and I am a guest at Wizard World. Wizard World Chicago, ten years ago, was my first con I ever attended...and now I am going there as a guest. Who knows, in 10 more years, I might be a SPECIAL guest.

My next project...

I have been hard at work on my next project, tentatively titled....ASTONISHING ADVENTURES! I had the first issue in the can and started work on the second issue. However, I decided to go back and rework the first half of the issue. I thought I would post some images from what I have done so far...

Monday, August 1, 2011

It's been awhile...

Howdy all! I haven't updated my blog for a couple of weeks, I've been hard at work revising my first issue of my new series, "Astonishing Adventures". Thought it was complete, but after attending a Symposia at TR!CKSTER during SDCC, I realized I need to polish it up and redo some of the art. During the symposia, Greg Rucka said that if any of your work sets off a bell in your head, and you know deep down inside it's not your best...IT'S NOT and you NEED TO GET RID OF IT. So, I am revamping my first half of the book.

On another note, looks like "Kidnapping Kevin Smith" may not be in stores until August 10th. I was a bit tardy on the shipping because I had to order a bunch of newly printed copies. So, if it's not in you LCS this Wednesday, it will be NEXT Wednesday.

Heading off to Comic Con!!!

Well, tomorrow I am heading off to the geek meca known as Comic Con! Looks to be a fun year, especially with the hip alternative to the Hollywood madness of CCI; I'm talking about TR!CKSTER!!! Where I will get to sit at the feet of the masters and learn a thing or two about comic books. Plus Mike Allred's band, the GEAR is putting on a free show or two, which should be quite a good time. Whilst there, I am also trying to pitch my NEW series, Astonishing Adventures. Hopfully somebody will like what they see and take a chance on me...

Han Solo, Princess Leia and Al Swearengen?!?!

My wife and I have been rewatching the great and prematurely cancelled HBO series, "Deadwood". As luck would have it, I was going through some old artwork and I found this painting I did in 2006. Why is Al Swearengen replacing Luke Skywalker? Because it's FUNNY, you loopy cunt!

Chicago Comic Con table banner

Since I will be tabling my second comic convention this August at the Wizard World Chicago Comic Con, I decided it was time to invest in one of those cool banners. You know the ones, tall, colorful images with the artist's name emblazoned on them. Here is my banner that will be featured behind my table at this con and future cons. It is also a sneak peek at my latest project...more on that MUCH later!

The World's Finest

PJ, the owner of my LCS, Heroes Only, asked me for a drawing of Superman. He loves himself some Last Son of Krypton and has some sketches of him by other artists. I did a drawing of Kal-El, flying through the clouds; and I wasn't "feeling it". So, I gave it a second try and busted out some Superman/Batman action. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out.

I have just completed an interview for the UK's Digital Spy website, which should be up in the next week or so. AND...Ralph Garman and Kevin Smith talked about it on Hollywood Babble On!!! Life is good.
Don't forget... book will be solicited in the June issue of Previews for an August release!!

Deadpool was quite popular at the con this year, so someone had me draw him!

Interview time!

Hey gang!! Check this out!! My long time friend and ceramics legend, Connie Norman, interviewed me for her blog. Usually she interviews big time ceramicists, but since I am her friend, she decided to go slumming and interview me!

ComicFest commissions continued

Here is another ComicFest commission, Moon Kinght. I have NEVER read Moon Knight or drawn him. His logo on his chest always reminded me of an outhouse, so....

Denver ComicFest commissions

Hey gang! This past weekend I tabled at the Denver ComicFest, my first time tabling a con! It was a great time. I shared a table with a hell of a guy and a hell of an artist, Brett Vinduska. I did some commissions at the con, which gave me the opprotunity to draw some characters I never drew before. Or in the case of this drawing, a lady from the Dept of Justice had me draw a picture of Liberty giving the BOOT to the MAN!

The BIG day!!

Ah...when it rains it pours! On Friday, I got a phone call from Diamond Distributors, telling me that my book will be solicited in the June issue of Previews!! Then today, I got my comics in the mail!!! And this upcoming weekend, I am tabling at the Denver ComicFest!! Shaping up to be pretty good April. Now if we could only get our house to sell....

The Rocketeer

Wow, the Rocketeer...has there ever been a more perfect comic book series? I discovered the late Dave Stevens' book WAY late. But I have to tell you, it quickly became of my favorite comics of all time. And, the 11x17 inch version of the Complete Adventures is mind boggling beautiful. Seeing the raw, beautiful, black and white images make me want to throw away EVERYTHING I have ever drawn and try HARDER!!!

Another sketch

I think to conserve time, I will do "busts" sketches at Denver's ComicFest. Here is another example that I will have on display. Spider-man, where are you comin from? Spider-man, nobody knows who you are!!!!

Thursday, March 10, 2011

I will be tabling at my first con next month, at Denver ComicFest!!! So, I figured I might be lucky enough to do sketches for attendees. In preparation, I am doing some samples...this one is one of my favorite characters, Mike Allred's MADMAN!

Emperor Larry David?

For some reason, I thought it would be funny to have Larry David dressed up as Emperor Palpatine. I think the end result is pre-tay pre-tay pre-tay good!

Me pappy...

Another preview image from my Kidnapping Kevin Smith graphic novel, this time featuring my dad as a bartender. I've always put my old man in my comics; way back in my first self published comic "Timebomb", he was doctor. So, here's the world's best dad, slingin beer behind the bar...

Gushie get me to SAM!!!

Quantum Leap has been on my mind lately, so I decide to draw the one and only Admiral Albert Calavicci smacking the Ziggy hand link. I LOVED Quantum Leap since it debuted on NBC when I was 14 years old; way back in the summer of 1989! We used to gather around my parents TV in their bedroom and watch Dr. Sam Beckett put right old wrongs. Hoping, that his next leap, will be his leap home!

The Cricket!!!

Thought today's blog post would take a break from my graphic novel and just do something for shits and giggles. My buddy Ralph Apel has created his own comic book character, THE CRICKET! I was checking out his blog and got the bug (pardon the pun) to draw the Cricket. Dig it!

The love of my life...

They say that behind every great man is a great woman; the same is true in my case, even though I am just okay...far from "great". My wife Alaina has been my greatest source of encouragement with my comic book, she believes in me, when I don't believe in myself. With out her support, I am pretty sure I would have lost my motivation and inpiration around my sixth rejection letter. So, I had to put her in my book, as a small nod to the happiness and ego boosts she provides on a daily basis.

Jamie S. Rich

My comic book is full of cameos by my friends, family members, and people I admire. One such cameo comes towards the end of the book. Jamie S. Rich is a great writer, if you haven't read "12 Reasons Why I Love Her", "Cut My Hair", or "You Have Killed Me"....WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING READING THIS BLOG?!?! Hop over to and order them....go ahead, I'll wait....
Ok, welcome back. Jamie has given me a lot of advice over the years, and I respect him a lot; so he appears in my story as the host of an entertainment tv show!

My Kevin Smith

Since I have been showcasing the Allred Kevin Smith, I thought I would show off MY likeness of the man. Kevin Smith; if you ever get the chance to chat to the dude in person, take it! He is such a kind, mild mannered, pleasant person to talk with. While he is hounded by fans nonstop, he still is very generous with his time and a very gracious person. Hell, he was nice enough to give me permission to do this comic book about him!

Kidnapping Kevin Smith COVER!!!

So....the day after Mike sent me the pencil sketch for the cover he sent me the fully inked and colored version! I opened the file, my eyes rapidly moved across the screen and passed out, all Chuck-like. That is how blown away I was. Here was the cover to my graphic novel I have been working on for a year; in all of its' Allred glory. Mike and Laura exceeded my expectations and I am very grateful that they did this.
I am just about ready to submit the book to Diamond and Haven to see if they will distribute it, so stay tuned for news on the books release.

Mike Allred pencils

So, with my sketch in his possession, Mike got crackin and turned out this great pencil drawing. Sunday I was in terrible shape, 102 degree fever with a painful case of strep throat; Mike e-mailed me the penciled page for approval that was the best medicine I had received all day! I couldn't believe how he took a simple sketch and turned it into this funny and mysterious drawing.

Tuesday, February 8, 2011

Well gang...the wait is over!!! My latest graphic novel venture is a charming little story, with the unoriginal title...KIDNAPPING KEVIN SMITH!!! (guess what it's about).
This book has been a one man jam for the past year, with only my friends and family to bounce ideas off of and check my poor spelling. But one day, the stars alligned and the seemingly impossible happened: the one, the only MIKE "DOC" ALLRED got on board to do the cover. This was a MAJOR event for me, I have been a fan of Mike's work ever since I read about the Atomics in CSN! He has been an amazingly generous and kind person, who makes you feel like an old friend the first time you talk to him. And now he is drawing the cover of my comic book!!
So, based on some 1st grader quality sketches, Mike and his amazingly talented wife, Laura, created what I feel to be some of their best work to date! least their best work based on one of my sketches:-)
So, over the next few days, I will be posting the progress of this great cover, for a pretty good graphic novel, drawn by a living legend! Here is phase one, my sketches of 4 cover ideas....
